Taking a Vacation? Don't Forget to Protect Your House While You're Away With These 4 Tips
Many of us will be going on vacation to get away this summer. But burglars are also more active during the summer, taking advantage of people’s vacation plans to break into their unprotected homes. Even if you have a home security system, how protected is your home?
Before you leave, it's a good idea to run down your vacation checklist to make certain that your home is protected. Here are a few security tips you should be sure to follow before you leave town.
Hold Your Mail
Mail fraud has become increasingly rampant. Your home security system probably doesn't cover your mailbox, and information sent through the mail is often very sensitive. Have your mail held by the post office, or arrange for a friend or neighbor to pick it up daily.
Keep Your Yard Trim
An uncharacteristically untrimmed lawn is a clear indication that nobody’s home. Arrange to have a service maintain your yard by cutting the grass and trimming the bushes.
Set Timers
Keeping lights, radio and TV on timers for periods when you'd usually be home with these devices on will help create the illusion that people are home. Burglars aren't interested in spending a lot of time checking to see if it's really you.
Inform the Police
In many places, you can call the police and let them know when you'll be out of town. They may put you on their vacation watch list along with information to contact you if something happens. This will also be helpful if your home alarm system goes off and your home security monitoring company calls the police. It can also help avoid fines for false alarms.
Remember to double check all the windows and doors and set your home alarm system. You may also want to contact your home alarm monitoring company and give them the dates you'll be out of town for their records.
